Indian Coast Guard syllabus with exam pattern 2016 (Assistant Commandant)

Recently Indian Coast Guard released forms for the officer post Assistant Commandant. Both men and women applied for this post. Till if you haven’t applied for this notification please apply here. Now it’s turn for Indian Coast Guard syllabus with exam pattern 2016. We are providing a detailed Indian Coast Guard syllabus of both the stages.

Firstly we will begin with Indian Coast Guard exam pattern 2016

There are mainly two stages for Indian Coast Guard exam (Assistant Commandant)

Stage 1)  Preliminary Selection: It consist of MAT (Mental Ability Test) and PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test).

Stage 2) Final Selection: It consists of the following main tests namely: Group Testing & Interview, Psychological Test and PABT (for GD Pilots only).


Indian Coast Guard syllabus 2016 (Assistant Commandant)

We will provide you the syllabus of:

  • Preliminary examination syllabus (Stage 1)
  • Final examination syllabus (Stage 2)

Let’s begin with first Preliminary examination syllabus which is further divided into two tests:

Preliminary examination

a) MAT (Mental Ability Test)

b) PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test)

Shortlisted candidates will be called for Preliminary Selection at given date and time which will consist of Mental Ability Test/ Cognitive Aptitude Test and Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PP&DT). The aptitude test will be in English only and will be objective type.


a) MAT (Mental Ability Test)

MAT syllabus which mainly covers 1) General Awareness & 2) Test of Reasoning

1) GA (General Awareness) 

  • Major financial /Economic News
  • Current Affairs (National and International)
  • Budget and Five Year Plans
  • Awards and Honors
  • Books and Authors
  • Sports
  • Abbreviations
  • Science – Inventions and Discoveries
  • International and National Organizations
  • Important Days
  • Famous personalities

2) Test of Reasoning 

Which is of types i) Verbal ii) Non-Verbal

i) Verbal

  • Number Series
  • Test of Direction Sense
  • Alphabet Series
  • Number Ranking
  • Coding-Decoding
  • Problem on Age Calculation
  • Arithmetical Reasoning
  • Analogy
  • Blood Relations
  • Decision Making etc.

ii) Non-Verbal

  • Non Verbal Series
  • Cubes and Dice
  • Grouping Identical Figures
  • Mirror Images
  • Embedded Figures etc

(This test will be in objective type)


Now step ahead towards second PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test)

b) PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test)

PPDT the name itself suggests (Picture Perception & Discussion Test) in which a hazy picture is shown for about 30 seconds and 1 minute to note down the details. Candidates are asked to write the story that they have perceived from the shown picture. After that a group discussion is conducted and each candidate discuss its story.


Now last comes the Final selection

The Final Selection will consist of Psychological Test, Group Task and Interview (Personality test). So we are posting Final examination syllabus please have a look on it.

Final Exam Syllabus

(i) Thematic Apperception Test (TAT):

  • In this test 12 slides or picture are displayed for 30 seconds each.
  • Candidates are asked to write a story around the situation of picture in 4 min. In the blank slide, they have to imagine a picture of their own choice and write a story accordingly.

(ii) Word Association Test (WAT):

  • WAT the word itself suggests the test is associated with words.
  • A series of 60 words are shown to the candidates one after another for 15 seconds each.
  • Candidates have to write a sentence on that particular word

(iii) Situation Reaction Test (SRT):

  • SRT in which 60 situations are given.
  • Students have to accomplish the sentence by giving their reactions to each situation.

(iv) Self Description:

  • Candidates have to describe themselves within 15 Minutes duration.
  • They are asked to write five separate five paragraphs about his parents/guardian

      There is not fix duration for general knowledge. It is good, if you prepare last 6 months current affairs.
