Kalpana Chawla the first Indian-American Astronaut and India’s first woman in space. It is truly said great persons always remain in our heart. India will always proud to have such a wonderful girl. She was not only known for her achievements but also for her brave & courage. Every Indian girl desires to be like her & to think like her & to fly like her. Although she was born in middle class family. Her dreams were high enough to touch the sky. Eventually she did it and became the first Indian women to go in the space. So I am here to discuss some unknown facts about Kalpana Chawla, so here are they:
Unkown Facts about Kalpana Chawla
As we told you earlier she was born to middle class family in the city of Karnal in Haryana. She was born in the year of 1962 on 17th of March. At that time girls were not allowed to step out of the home. But she made a difference and created her own path.
She said “I don’t know why I always liked aerospace engineering. I was in the 10th grade when I figured that’s what I wanted to do”
She accomplished her schooling from Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School, Karnal. Pursued her B.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College at Chandigarh in 1982.
It was the year 1982 she decided to move USA for higher studies. After two year (1984) she obtained a Msc degree in Aerospace Engineering from Texas University .
Jean-Pierre Harrison met Kalpana Chawla on 2 September 1982, one day after she arrived in the USA to attend the University of Texas at Arlington. They married in December 1983 and stayed together until the loss of Columbia in February 2003.
Master Degree & PhD
In 1986, she got her second master degree in 1986. In 1988, she earned a PhD in aerospace engineering from University of Colorado at Boulder.
Heights to her Carrier
In 1988 she started to work for NASA. She was chose as a Vice President of Overset Methods, Inc in NASA Ames Research Center. There she did a deep research on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) on airplane takeoff and landing concepts.
#Certified Plane Instructor
She got a commercial pilot license for the seaplanes, multi engine air place and glider. Moreover, she also earned a Certificated Flight Instructor for glider and airplanes.
#NASA Astronaut Corps
In 1991 she became a US citizen and applied for the membership of NASA Astronaut Corps
In 1997 her dream come true as she made her first fly in space with the distance of 10.67 million km around the earth. At that time she working as the primary robotic arm operator and as the mission specialist.
It was the dated 1 February 2003 an accident occurred in the space shuttle. And Along with 7 seven crew members she died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster which happened when the Space Shuttle disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.
For her excellence and great work she was awarded:
- Congressional Space Medal of Honor
- NASA Space Flight Medal
- NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
Kalpana had a intrest in Scuba diving thus she took lessons to obtain a basic diver certification.
